Description
Here is a vintage quilt top in the Tonganoxie Nine Patch pattern, #1828 in the Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns by Barbara Brackman. This pattern is categorized an Unequal Nine Patch with Small Center Square where patches are squares and rectangles. Pattern is so named by Carrie Hall.Top is hand pieced and measures approximately 84" x 74". Fabrics are cottons from the Civil War Era including cranberry red, indigo blue, shirting, browns and double pinks. Please note, a lot of the patches are pieced and may not be of the same fabric design.
The sashing and borders are approximately 5 1/2" wide in a pumpkin background with brown dots.
There are several brown spots scattered throughout the top, most are shown in the photos. The sashing on the right hand side of the photo has what appears to be sticker residue in two places. With care, this could probably be removed.
This is definitely a "make do with what I have top", using the smallest of scraps and in some cases, narrow sashing to make the blocks square.
Item does not include any backing fabric, binding or batting for the top.
When working with vintage fabric, blocks, tops or quilts, prior quilting and piecing experience is helpful. Pieces were not rotary cut and cutting templates and patterns may not have been square. Pieced items may not be flat. Vintage items may have a musty or storage odor.
